iPhone Component-Level Repair: Which Faults Can Be Fixed at Chip Level (and Which Can't)

By Shrey Sharma, Founder & Lead Technician · April 2026
Most iPhone faults are diagnosed as 'needs board replacement' by shops without micro-soldering capability. Many of those faults are actually repairable at component level — at a fraction of the cost. Here's what's actually possible.

iPhone logic board repair is one of the least understood areas of Apple device service. Most iPhone repair shops either replace the entire phone or replace the entire board — neither of which addresses the actual fault at component level. Chip-level repair, by contrast, identifies and replaces the specific failed IC, capacitor, or transistor on the board. At Mac Repair Center Mumbai, we perform iPhone logic board repairs that other shops declare impossible. This guide explains what's realistically achievable.
The Fundamentals: Why iPhone Board Repair Is Hard
iPhone logic boards are among the most densely populated circuit boards in consumer electronics. A modern iPhone 15 Pro logic board contains hundreds of components — Apple-designed SoCs, NAND flash, DRAM, RF transceivers, power management ICs, audio codecs, and dozens of smaller passives — all packed into a form factor smaller than a credit card. The components are soldered with BGA (Ball Grid Array) and LGA (Land Grid Array) packages at pitches as fine as 0.35mm. Working on these boards requires a stereo microscope, a calibrated hot air rework station, and schematic-level knowledge of iPhone circuit design.
Faults That Are Regularly Repaired at Component Level
- Charging IC failure (Tigris / PMIC) — the most common iPhone board-level fault. Causes: iPhone not charging, slow charging, or charging stopping at certain percentages. The charging IC or its associated capacitors fail after liquid exposure or electrical surge. Replacement cost significantly less than a new board.
- Audio IC failure — the 'iPhone audio IC disease' affected iPhone 6s and 7 models specifically. Symptoms: microphone not working, greyed-out speaker options, or the phone showing no audio output options. Underfill cracking under the audio IC is the root cause; reballing the IC restores function.
- NAND flash issues — the NAND storage controller can fail causing 'iPhone cannot be restored' errors, activation loops, or iTunes error 4013/4014. In some cases, NAND reballing or replacement restores function.
- Backlight filter and coil — water damage or shorts kill the backlight circuit, leaving the screen dark even when the LCD is functional. Replacing the backlight filter and diode is a straightforward board repair.
- Baseband / cellular failure — the baseband chip handles mobile connectivity. Liquid damage or drops can cause 'No Service' permanently. In some cases, baseband reballing or replacement restores cellular function.
- USB/charging port flex board — the connector board containing the Lightning or USB-C port and the Taptic Engine connection is a separate PCB that frequently fails from mechanical stress or liquid ingress. Replacement is simpler than full board repair.
Faults Where Component Repair Has Limitations
- Face ID failure — Face ID uses a cryptographic pairing between the TrueDepth camera flood illuminator and the Secure Enclave in the Apple SoC. If the flood illuminator cable is damaged, Face ID fails permanently — Apple has locked the pairing to the original sensor. The sensor cannot be replaced without losing Face ID (on any current iPhone).
- Apple SoC failure — the main A-series or M-series chip itself failing is extremely rare but when it occurs, the phone is typically not economically repairable at component level.
- Touch ID on iPhones with Touch ID — the Home button's Touch ID sensor is cryptographically paired to the logic board. A replacement Touch ID button from another iPhone will not work.
- Severe corrosion — when liquid damage has caused corrosion that's eaten through multiple board traces and pads, the repair becomes cost-prohibitive even if technically possible.
Apple serialises certain components to specific devices — Face ID sensors, Touch ID Home buttons (older models), and display panels (newer models) are cryptographically paired at the factory. Replacing these components with genuine Apple parts from another device doesn't work — only Apple's authorised diagnostic tool can perform the pairing. Mac Repair Center uses specialised tools to handle display pairing for screen replacements.
Water-Damaged iPhones: Board-Level vs. Cleaning
The majority of iPhone water damage cases don't require board-level component replacement — they require professional board cleaning. Ultrasonic cleaning removes corrosive mineral deposits and dissolved organic compounds from Mumbai's monsoon rain, salt water, or beverage spills. After cleaning, most components resume function. The minority of cases where cleaning isn't enough require the specific failed component to be identified and replaced — typically a power management IC, charging circuit component, or backlight filter that was directly bridged by conductive liquid.
