MacBook Pro Flexgate: The Backlight Cable Fault That Affects 2016–2019 Models

Flexgate is a design defect in 13-inch MacBook Pro 2016–2019 models where the backlight flex cable wears through from repeated lid opening. The symptom: a thin bright line at the bottom of the screen, then complete backlight failure. Here's the diagnosis, affected models, and the permanent fix.

MacBook Pro Flexgate: The Backlight Cable Fault That Affects 2016–2019 Models

Flexgate is the nickname for a design defect in Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 models. The fault: a flex cable connecting the display to the logic board is too short, causing it to gradually tear from repeated lid opening and closing. The result progresses in stages — first a thin bright line appears at the bottom of the display, then the backlight fails entirely when the lid is opened past a certain angle, and finally the screen goes permanently dark. At Mac Repair Center Mumbai, Flexgate cases are among the most common screen-related repairs we handle for these model years.

Which MacBooks Are Affected

  • MacBook Pro 13-inch (2016) — four Thunderbolt 3 ports model (A1706) and two Thunderbolt 3 ports model (A1708)
  • MacBook Pro 13-inch (2017) — A1706 and A1708
  • MacBook Pro 13-inch (2018) — A1989
  • MacBook Pro 13-inch (2019) — A1989 and A2159
  • Note: The 15-inch models from this era are NOT affected — they use a different display cable routing. The 2020 models were redesigned with a longer cable that resolved the issue.

The Three Stages of Flexgate Failure

  1. 1Stage 1 — Bright line at the bottom: A thin horizontal bar of brighter light appears at the very bottom edge of the display. This is where the backlight diffuser is stressed by the short cable. The screen otherwise works normally. Many users mistake this for a dead pixel row or a display defect.
  2. 2Stage 2 — Angle-dependent backlight: The backlight works when the lid is at certain angles (typically up to 40–60°) but fails when opened further. The display shows a faint image (the LCD panel is still working — only the backlight has failed). At this stage, shining a flashlight at the screen reveals the image. A common workaround is propping the lid at a shallow angle.
  3. 3Stage 3 — Complete backlight failure: The flex cable has torn completely. The backlight no longer works at any angle. The screen is dark even at shallow angles. The LCD panel may still be functional, but without backlight the display is unusable in normal lighting.
Quick Self-Diagnosis

Open your MacBook lid slowly from closed. If the backlight works at 30° but fails at 90°, this is almost certainly Flexgate. Shine a torch at the screen when the backlight is off — if you can see a faint desktop image, your LCD is fine and only the backlight is affected.

Why This Happens — The Engineering Problem

In these MacBook Pro models, Apple routed the display flex cable through a very tight channel near the hinge. The cable is slightly too short for the arc described by the lid opening. Every time you open the lid past 90°, the cable is placed under tension at the same point — approximately 5mm from the cable's solder connection to the display assembly. Over time (typically 1–3 years of normal use), the copper traces in the flex cable fatigue and crack at this stress point. The backlight traces crack first because they carry higher current.

The Repair Options

  • Apple's repair programme — Apple acknowledged this defect and ran a Flexgate repair programme for affected 13-inch 2016 MacBook Pro units, offering free display replacement. This programme ended in 2023. Units outside the programme must pay Apple's standard out-of-warranty display price (₹35,000–₹55,000).
  • Third-party display assembly replacement — replacing the entire display assembly with a compatible unit resolves the issue permanently if the replacement uses the corrected longer cable. Cost at Mac Repair Center: ₹10,000–₹18,000 depending on model.
  • Cable-only repair — in Stage 1 and early Stage 2, it is sometimes possible to replace only the flex cable rather than the entire display assembly. This requires careful disassembly of the display panel and is technically demanding. Cost is lower but success is model-dependent.

Do not attempt to 'fix' Flexgate by forcefully bending the lid — this accelerates cable failure and can crack the LCD panel. If you're at Stage 2, avoid opening the lid past the point where the backlight fails to slow further damage.

Flexgate at Mac Repair Center Mumbai

We've repaired hundreds of Flexgate cases across the 2016–2019 MacBook Pro 13-inch range. For Stage 1 and 2 cases, we assess whether cable-only repair is viable before recommending full display replacement — this can save ₹6,000–₹10,000 on the repair. For Stage 3 cases, display assembly replacement is almost always the correct path. Free diagnosis, same-day assessment.
