Before you assume your AirPods are dying, work through these fixes in order — most connection issues are solved in under 5 minutes without spending a rupee.

How to Fix AirPods That Won't Connect to Your iPhone or MacBook

AirPods refusing to connect — or connecting, then dropping out, or only working in one ear — is one of the most common Apple accessory complaints we hear. Before assuming the worst, work through these fixes in order. Roughly 9 out of 10 cases are solved without any repair at all.

Quick Fixes to Try First (In This Order)

  1. 1Check the battery — open the case near your iPhone; a popup shows charge levels for both AirPods and the case. Below 10%, charge for at least 15 minutes before troubleshooting further
  2. 2Turn Bluetooth off and on again — Settings > Bluetooth (iPhone) or Control Center (Mac) — this resolves the majority of one-off connection glitches
  3. 3Restart your iPhone or Mac — clears temporary Bluetooth stack issues that build up over time
  4. 4Make sure AirPods are actually in your device's Bluetooth list — Settings > Bluetooth and check they appear as 'Connected,' not just 'Not Connected' or absent entirely
  5. 5Check for AirPods firmware updates — these install automatically when the AirPods are charging, in range, and connected to your iPhone; just leave them connected and charging overnight

If Quick Fixes Don't Work: Forget and Re-Pair

  1. 1On your iPhone: go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the (i) icon next to your AirPods, and tap 'Forget This Device'
  2. 2Place both AirPods in the case, close the lid, wait 30 seconds, then open it
  3. 3Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes white
  4. 4Hold the open case near your iPhone — a setup animation should appear; tap 'Connect'
  5. 5Once paired to your iPhone, they'll automatically work across all devices signed into the same iCloud account (including your Mac), with no extra steps
SymptomMost Likely CauseWhat to Try
Only one AirPod connects or produces soundDirty contacts inside the case, or one AirPod's battery has degraded fasterClean the charging contacts gently with a dry, soft cloth; check individual battery levels in Settings
Connects, then drops every few minutesBluetooth interference, outdated firmware, or a software glitch on your phoneMove away from other Bluetooth devices/Wi-Fi routers; update firmware; try the Forget and Re-pair process above
Won't appear in Bluetooth list at allCase battery is dead, or a deeper hardware fault in the AirPods themselvesCharge the case for 30+ minutes, then retry setup; if still not appearing, the AirPods may need professional inspection
Audio is muffled, crackly, or one-sidedEarwax/debris buildup in the speaker mesh, or a hardware faultClean gently with a dry cotton swab around (not inside) the speaker mesh; if persistent, this needs a technician's inspection
The Cleaning Step Most People Skip

AirPods sit in your ears, collecting earwax and skin oils, then go into a case that collects pocket lint — both can block the tiny speaker mesh and the charging contacts. Gently wipe the mesh with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth and clean the metal charging contacts inside the case (and on the AirPods stems) with a dry cotton swab. Never use water, alcohol, or compressed air directly into the speaker mesh.

If your AirPods or case have been exposed to rain, sweat, or any liquid (common during Mumbai's monsoon and humid months), do NOT place them on the charger immediately — let them air-dry completely for at least 24 hours first. Charging a wet case can cause a short circuit and permanent damage to the charging components.
