How to Reset AirPods — All Models, Step by Step (2026 Guide)

By Shrey Sharma, Founder & Lead Technician · June 2026
A full reset solves problems that simple reconnecting can't — sound issues, persistent pairing failures, and AirPods that 'belong' to someone else's account. Here's the exact process for every model.

When simple reconnecting tricks don't fix your AirPods, a full factory reset clears every saved setting and pairing record — effectively making them 'new' again. It's the right move for persistent connection drops, ear detection problems, sound issues that survive a restart, or AirPods you bought second-hand that still show another person's name. Here's the exact process for every model.
How to Reset AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods 3rd/4th Gen
- 1Place both AirPods into their charging case, but don't close the lid yet
- 2On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the (i) info icon next to your AirPods, and tap 'Forget This Device' — confirm when prompted
- 3Close the case lid and wait about 30 seconds
- 4Open the lid, then press and hold the small setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes amber a few times, then white — this is the reset
- 5With the lid still open, hold the case close to your unlocked iPhone — the setup animation will appear; tap 'Connect' and follow the prompts to re-pair as new
How to Reset AirPods Max (Over-Ear Model)
- 1On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the (i) icon next to AirPods Max, and tap 'Forget This Device'
- 2Press and hold both the Digital Crown and the noise control button on the headphones simultaneously for about 15 seconds
- 3Watch for the LED status light (inside the right ear cup) to flash amber, then white — confirming the reset is complete
- 4Bring the headphones close to your unlocked iPhone to trigger the setup animation, and tap 'Connect' to re-pair
| Reason to Reset | Does a Reset Fix It? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent connection drops after trying basic fixes | Yes — usually resolves it | Clears corrupted pairing data that simple reconnects can't touch |
| Bought second-hand and it still shows the previous owner's name/account | Yes — this is the correct fix | After resetting, it pairs fresh to your Apple ID with no trace of the previous owner |
| One AirPod is silent or distorted | Sometimes — worth trying before assuming hardware failure | If the issue persists after a reset and re-pair, it's very likely a hardware fault needing inspection |
| Battery seems to drain unusually fast | No — a reset won't fix battery degradation | This is a hardware/battery health issue; a reset only affects pairing and software settings, not battery chemistry |
| Ear detection / automatic switching between devices stopped working | Yes, frequently | Resets often clear up Continuity and ear-detection glitches tied to old pairing records |
Before you even start using second-hand AirPods, do a full factory reset (steps above) — even if the seller claims they already removed them from their account. This clears any lingering settings, ensures Find My isn't still tracking them to someone else's iCloud, and gives you a clean, fully-functional pairing from the very first use.
A factory reset will NOT fix a hardware problem — distorted sound, a dead microphone, or extremely short battery life that persists after a reset and fresh re-pair point to a genuine component fault. Continuing to use AirPods with a degrading battery can occasionally cause the battery to swell inside the compact casing, which can crack the housing from the inside.
