iPhone Water Damage in Mumbai Monsoon: Complete Recovery Guide (2026)
IP68 doesn't mean waterproof. Mumbai's monsoon catches iPhone owners off guard every year — heavy rain, flooded streets, and soaked bags. Here's exactly what to do if your iPhone gets wet, and what the IP rating actually means.

Every year, the first week of Mumbai's monsoon brings a wave of water-damaged iPhones to our Kandivali workshop. People are caught off guard by sudden downpours, flooded footpaths, and phone calls taken in the rain. The common assumption: 'my iPhone is IP68 rated, it should be fine.' This assumption costs people thousands of rupees in avoidable repairs. Here's the truth about IP ratings, what actually damages iPhones in monsoon conditions, and exactly what to do if yours gets wet.
What IP68 Actually Means — And What It Doesn't
IP68 means your iPhone has been tested to withstand submersion in up to 6 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. It does not mean: waterproof in moving water, resistant to rain (which has high kinetic impact), functional after repeated water exposure, or resistant to salt water, pool water, or any liquid other than fresh water.
Mumbai's monsoon rain is not laboratory fresh water. It comes with significant force, it often carries particulates and pollutants, and Mumbai flooding exposes iPhones to saline or chemically contaminated water. Critically, the water resistance of an iPhone degrades over time — the seals that provide IP68 protection wear out with regular use, drops, and heat exposure. Apple themselves state in their fine print that water resistance is not a permanent condition.
Salt water, pool water, or contaminated flood water is exponentially more damaging than fresh water. If your iPhone was exposed to anything other than clean rain, treat it as a serious water damage event even if it appears to be working.
Signs Your iPhone Has Water Damage
- Screen flickering or showing green/pink lines after getting wet
- Touch not responding or ghost touches after rain exposure
- Speaker sounding muffled or crackling
- Microphone cutting out on calls
- Charging port not accepting the cable
- Camera lens fogged up from inside
- iPhone working fine immediately after, then failing days later (delayed corrosion)
- Battery draining rapidly after water exposure
- Face ID failing after a wet incident
What To Do in the First 30 Minutes
- 1Power off your iPhone immediately — hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to power off. Do not just lock the screen.
- 2Do not plug it in to charge — water and electrical current in a connector cause immediate corrosion.
- 3Do not use a hairdryer — heat expands the water deeper into the device.
- 4Gently wipe the exterior with a dry cloth. Do not shake vigorously.
- 5If you're near our Kandivali location, bring it in immediately. If not, call +91 77000 44192 for emergency pickup.
- 6If the iPhone was in salt water or flood water, rinse it briefly under clean running water before bringing it in — removing the contaminants quickly helps.
Many iPhones work perfectly for 24–72 hours after water exposure, then suddenly fail. This is because corrosion builds up gradually on board traces and connector pins. If your iPhone got significantly wet during monsoon, even if it seems fine, bring it in for a free inspection. Prevention is far cheaper than repair.
What We Can Repair — And What We Can't
The good news: most iPhone water damage is repairable when treated quickly. Screen replacement handles display damage. Board cleaning and drying addresses software-level malfunctions. Component replacement fixes specific failed parts like the charging port or speakers. The challenging cases are iPhones where the logic board has been severely corroded — particularly where the NAND storage or baseband chip has been affected. In these cases, even if we can restore function, data recovery becomes a separate and more complex process.
iPhone Water Damage Costs in Mumbai
- Basic cleaning and inspection: ₹1,500–2,500
- Screen replacement after water damage: ₹3,500–18,000 depending on model
- Charging port replacement: ₹1,500–3,000
- Speaker/microphone replacement: ₹1,500–3,000
- Logic board cleaning and component repair: ₹3,000–8,000
- Data recovery if needed: ₹4,000 onwards
Monsoon Prep: Preventing iPhone Water Damage
- Use a waterproof phone case — hard-shell cases with IP ratings are available for all iPhone models
- Keep a waterproof zip-lock bag in your commute bag for monsoon season
- Avoid phone calls in heavy rain — water gets in through the microphone and speaker grilles
- Check that your iPhone's SIM tray is properly seated — it's a common water ingress point
- If you're in a flooded area, put the iPhone in airplane mode — it reduces internal heat and eliminates the radio components' power draw

Hot beverages are the most damaging liquid for a MacBook logic board — far worse than plain water. The sugars, tannins, and acids in chai and coffee accelerate corrosion in ways water doesn't. Here's the exact response protocol.

You don't need to drop your MacBook in a puddle for monsoon to damage it. Mumbai's 85–95% relative humidity silently corrodes connectors, degrades batteries, and causes intermittent faults that take months to appear.
