Dead M1–M5 MacBook? Why Your Data Can Only Be Recovered Through the Original Logic Board
By Shrey Sharma, Founder & Lead Technician · October 2026
On every Apple Silicon MacBook, the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted by the Apple chip itself. That changes data recovery completely: the only way to your files is to get the original board working again.

Your M-series MacBook won't turn on, and the files on it matter more than the machine. Maybe it's a year of client work, your thesis, or photos that never made it to iCloud. Here's what most people don't know until it's too late: on an Apple Silicon MacBook, there is no SSD you can pull out and plug into another computer. The only way back to your data runs through the original logic board. This guide explains why, what can make data unrecoverable, and the decisions in the next few days that protect your chances.
The Short Answer
On M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 MacBooks, the storage chips are soldered onto the logic board and everything on them is encrypted using keys held inside that specific Apple chip. The storage cannot be read anywhere else. So recovering data from a dead M-series MacBook means repairing the board far enough for it to start up again (into macOS, or at least into macOS Recovery) and then copying the data off. If someone replaces the board instead, the data is gone with the old one.
What Changed With Apple Silicon Storage
On many older MacBooks, the SSD was a separate blade held in with one screw. If the logic board died, a technician could remove the SSD and read it with an adapter. That option ended in stages. Most 2016–2017 Touch Bar models soldered the storage to the board, the 2018–2020 Intel models with Apple's T2 chip encrypted it, and every Apple Silicon Mac does both. The storage controller isn't a separate part any more either: it sits inside the Apple chip.
| MacBook generation | Where the storage lives | Removable? | Data recovery path |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013–2015 Air and Pro | Separate SSD blade | Yes | Read the SSD in another Mac or with an adapter |
| 2016–2017 | Blade on the 13-inch non-Touch Bar Pro (A1708); soldered on Touch Bar models | Depends on model | Check your model number first |
| 2018–2020 Intel (T2 chip) | Soldered, encrypted by the T2 | No | Repair the board until the T2 and storage work |
| M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 | Soldered, encrypted by the Apple chip's Secure Enclave | No | Repair the board until it boots or reaches Recovery |
Is My Data Encrypted Even If I Never Turned On FileVault?
Yes. On Apple Silicon (and T2) Macs, the internal storage is always encrypted in hardware, whether or not FileVault is on. FileVault adds one more lock on top, which is your login password. Without FileVault, the data unlocks automatically when the original chip starts up. With FileVault, it unlocks once you also enter your password. Either way, the decryption keys never leave the Apple chip on that board. Desoldering the storage chips and reading them elsewhere only gives you unreadable encrypted data.
So What Does Data Recovery Mean on an M-Series MacBook?
It means board-level repair with one goal: get the original Apple chip and storage working together again for long enough to copy your files. Sometimes that's the same work as a full repair. Sometimes the board only needs to reach macOS Recovery, which on Apple Silicon includes a Share Disk option that makes the internal drive available to another Mac over a USB-C cable.
- 1Free diagnosis: we measure what the board is doing. That means current draw at the charger, voltages on the main power rails, and whether the Apple chip responds at all.
- 2Find the fault. The usual culprits on M-series boards are a failed USB-C port controller, audio IC, power IC or charging IC, often after liquid damage.
- 3Repair only what's needed for the Apple chip and storage to power up correctly.
- 4Start the Mac normally, or into Recovery, and copy your data to your own drive (or one we provide) using Share Disk or a direct copy.
- 5Then you decide: finish the full repair, or stop once the data is safe.
What Can Make Data Unrecoverable?
- The Apple chip itself has failed. It holds the encryption keys, so if it can't run, the data can't be decrypted.
- The storage chips are physically damaged, most often by a short circuit after the Mac was powered on while still wet.
- A logic board replacement. A new board comes with a new Apple chip and blank storage, and the old data doesn't transfer.
- Moving the storage chips onto a different board. The new board's chip can't decrypt them.
- A DFU Restore. Apple Configurator offers Revive (reinstalls firmware, keeps data) and Restore (erases everything). Make sure nobody picks Restore before you've decided about your data.
If Apple or any repair shop recommends a logic board replacement and you need your data, say so before you approve the repair. Replacing the board permanently ends access to anything that wasn't backed up.
What Should I Do Right Now If My M-Series MacBook Is Dead?
- 1If liquid was involved, stop trying to power it on or charge it. Each attempt risks a short that can damage the storage chips.
- 2Check your backups first. iCloud Drive, Desktop & Documents sync, Google Drive or an old Time Machine disk may already have most of what you need.
- 3Note down your login password. If FileVault is on, nobody can unlock the data without it, including us.
- 4Don't approve a board replacement or a DFU Restore until you've decided whether the data matters.
- 5Ask for a chip-level diagnosis rather than a board swap, and get a written quote before any work starts.
How Much Does M-Series MacBook Data Recovery Cost in Mumbai?
The price depends on what's wrong with the board, not on how much data you have. Simple cases, such as software corruption on a Mac that still starts up, start from ₹3,500. Hardware cases start from ₹8,000. If the board needs component-level repair before the data can be reached, the cost is usually that repair, typically ₹6,000–₹16,000 on standard M-series boards (MacBook Pros with Pro or Max chips cost more). You get the exact figure after the free diagnosis, before any work begins.
Does Apple Recover Data From a Dead MacBook?
Apple's service process for a failed logic board is to replace the board, and Apple asks customers to back up beforehand because data on the device may be erased during service. That's a reasonable process for a fast, standard repair, but it isn't designed for data recovery. If your files aren't backed up, get a board-level diagnosis before handing the Mac in for a board replacement.
Can Data Be Recovered From a Water-Damaged M1 or M2 MacBook?
Often, yes, especially if the MacBook was not powered on again after the spill. Liquid usually damages the components around the power and charging circuits before it reaches the Apple chip or storage. Once that corrosion is cleaned and the damaged parts are replaced, the board starts up and the data is intact. The biggest threat is repeatedly trying to turn on or charge a wet MacBook, because that's how a short spreads to parts that can't be replaced.
Can I Recover Data Myself With Software?
Only if the Mac still starts up. Data recovery software runs on a working computer. It can bring back deleted files or repair a damaged file system, but it can't reach a drive on a board that won't power on. If your MacBook is completely dead, software isn't an option yet. The board has to work first.
