M3 or M4 MacBook SSD Failure: Why You Can't Just Swap the Drive, and What Recovery Costs
By Shrey Sharma, Founder & Lead Technician · October 2026
On M3 and M4 MacBooks, the SSD isn't a separate part. It's storage chips soldered to the logic board and run by the Apple chip. How to tell real storage failure from fixable software problems, what repair options exist, and what happens to your data.

On an Intel-era MacBook, a failing SSD was a straightforward fix: pull the drive and fit a new one. On M3 and M4 MacBooks, that option doesn't exist. The storage is a set of chips soldered to the logic board, managed by a controller inside the Apple chip, and encrypted by it. That makes it all the more important to work out whether the storage has actually failed, because many "dead SSD" Macs turn out to have a problem that can be fixed without losing anything.
Signs Your MacBook's Storage May Be in Trouble
- A folder with a question mark at startup, or the Mac can't find a startup disk.
- Repeated restarts (kernel panics), especially when the panic report mentions the storage controller (often labelled ANS).
- Disk Utility in Recovery doesn't list the internal drive, or First Aid keeps reporting errors it can't fix.
- The Mac becomes extremely slow, freezes while saving or opening files, or files you saved come back damaged.
- macOS installs or updates fail every time at the same point.
Is It Really the SSD, or Something Fixable?
Many of these symptoms have causes other than failed storage chips. A damaged file system, a broken macOS install or an update interrupted by a power cut can all look like a dead SSD and can be fixed without losing data. So can a fault elsewhere on the board that stops the storage from getting stable power. Before anyone talks about replacing storage or the board, check:
- 1Start up in Recovery (hold the power button until the startup options appear) and run Disk Utility First Aid on the internal volumes.
- 2If First Aid succeeds, reinstall macOS from Recovery over the existing install. This replaces the system without erasing your files.
- 3If the internal drive isn't visible in Recovery at all, stop there and get a board-level diagnosis. Repeated attempts won't help.
The free tool smartmontools (install it with Homebrew, then run smartctl -a disk0 in Terminal) shows how worn the internal storage is under "Percentage Used". Values well below 100% are normal. If you rely heavily on an 8GB or 16GB model that swaps memory to disk, it's worth checking once a year.
Why Can't the SSD Simply Be Replaced?
Three things stop it. The storage chips are soldered to the board, so there's no drive to unplug. The controller that runs them is part of the M3 or M4 chip, not a separate component. And everything stored on them is encrypted with keys that exist only inside that Apple chip. Even when the storage chips themselves are replaced, the Mac then starts from empty storage after a fresh macOS install. The old data can't be moved onto the new chips.
What Are the Repair Options?
| Situation | What it means | Your data |
|---|---|---|
| Software or file system corruption | Repair the file system or reinstall macOS over the top | Usually kept |
| Board fault affecting storage power or signals | Chip-level repair of the failed parts | Kept, once the board works |
| Storage chips genuinely failed | Replacement of the storage chips at chip level; the Mac works again | Lost unless backed up |
| Apple chip failed | Board replacement | Lost unless backed up |
Can Data Be Recovered From a Failed M3 or M4 SSD?
It depends on what actually failed. If the cause is software or a board fault around the storage, the data is usually recoverable, either by repairing the fault and starting up normally or by using Share Disk in Recovery to copy files to another Mac. If the storage chips themselves have failed, or the Apple chip that holds the encryption keys has, the data can't be recovered by anyone. That's why the diagnosis matters more than the label "SSD failure".
How Much Does It Cost?
Software-level recovery starts from ₹3,500 and hardware cases from ₹8,000. Where a board fault is stopping the storage from working, chip-level repair typically costs ₹6,000–₹16,000 on standard M-series boards (MacBook Pros with Pro or Max chips cost more), and gives you back both the Mac and the data. If the storage or the Apple chip has genuinely failed, we'll say so after the free diagnosis rather than charge for a recovery that can't succeed.
How Can I Protect My Data on an M3 or M4 MacBook?
- Turn on iCloud Desktop & Documents sync, or use any cloud service, for active work files.
- Keep a Time Machine backup on an inexpensive external SSD and plug it in weekly.
- Write down or store your FileVault recovery key somewhere safe outside the Mac.
- Act on early warnings, such as repeated kernel panics or First Aid errors, while the Mac still starts up and data can still be copied.
Does This Apply to M1, M2 and M5 MacBooks Too?
Yes. Every Apple Silicon MacBook, from M1 to M5, uses soldered storage managed and encrypted by the Apple chip, so the same rules apply: diagnose before replacing anything, never approve a board swap or DFU Restore if you need the data, and keep a backup that doesn't depend on the Mac.

Dead M1–M5 MacBook? Why Your Data Can Only Be Recovered Through the Original Logic Board
On every Apple Silicon MacBook, the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted by the Apple chip itself. That changes data recovery completely: the only way to your files is to get the original board working again.

FileVault decides what can be recovered from an M-series MacBook. When a forgotten password is fixable, when it isn't, how that combines with a dead logic board, and why nobody legitimate can bypass it.

Apple quoted a full logic board replacement for your M1, M2, M3 or M4 MacBook. Here's why Apple quotes the whole board, what usually failed on it, when chip-level repair is the better deal, and when it honestly isn't.
