MacBook Got Wet? Do These 5 Things Immediately to Save It

Water damage is a race against corrosion. The first 30 minutes after your MacBook gets wet determine whether it lives or dies. Here's what to do right now.

Step 1: Power Off Immediately
Electricity and water together cause short circuits that permanently destroy logic board components. If your MacBook is on, hold the power button for 10 seconds to force it off. Do not let it sleep — turn it OFF. Do not plug in the charger. Do not try to see if it still works.
Attempting to power on a wet MacBook is the single most common mistake that turns a repairable MacBook into an irreparable one.
Step 2: Remove All Cables and Accessories
Disconnect the charger, external drives, USB hubs, headphones — everything. Keeping peripherals connected maintains electrical pathways that water can bridge and short.
Step 3: Drain the Liquid
Tilt the MacBook with the keyboard side down so liquid drains toward the keyboard rather than deeper into the device. An inverted V-shape (tent position) with the MacBook propped open helps gravity drain liquid out. Do not shake it aggressively.
Step 4: Do NOT Put It in Rice
The rice myth is wrong and potentially harmful. Rice does not absorb the liquid that has already reached your logic board. Worse, rice particles can enter the MacBook and cause additional damage. Leave it in a dry, ventilated area — not in a bag of rice.
Step 5: Call a Professional Immediately
Water damage repair is time-critical. Within the first few hours, liquid has minimal corrosion impact. After 24–48 hours, mineral deposits and oxidation begin damaging components permanently. Professional ultrasonic cleaning removes corrosion before it causes lasting damage.
