How to Check if Your iPhone or MacBook Has Genuine Parts (Repair History Check)

Buying second-hand or just got something replaced? Apple's devices can now tell you, in plain language, whether a part is genuine — here's exactly where to look on iPhone and Mac.

How to Check if Your iPhone or MacBook Has Genuine Parts (Repair History Check)

Since iOS 15.2, Apple quietly added a feature that tells you, in plain English, whether key components in your iPhone — battery, display, and camera — are genuine Apple parts or not. It's one of the most useful (and least known) tools for both used-device buyers and anyone who's recently had a repair done anywhere. Here's exactly where to find it.

How to Check on iPhone (iOS 15.2 and Later)

  1. 1Open Settings
  2. 2Tap General
  3. 3Tap About
  4. 4Scroll down — if any component has been replaced with a non-genuine or unverified part, you'll see a yellow warning message naming the component (e.g., 'Important Battery Message,' 'Important Display Message,' or 'Important Camera Message')
  5. 5Tap the warning for more details — it explains exactly what 'unable to verify' means for that component

What the Different Messages Actually Mean

Message You SeeWhat It MeansShould You Worry?
No message shown for any componentAll checked parts are verified genuine Apple components, properly pairedNo — this is the ideal state
'Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery'The battery is either non-genuine, or a genuine part installed without completing Apple's parts-pairing processWorth asking about — but doesn't always mean poor quality. Battery health (Settings > Battery) tells you more about actual performance
'Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple display'Same as above, but for the screen — common after independent repairsCheck the screen's actual performance (True Tone, color accuracy, touch response) — the message alone doesn't indicate a quality problem
Multiple component warnings shown togetherSeveral parts have been replaced — worth asking the seller for the full repair historyUse this as a negotiating point on price for a used device, and ask for proof of when/where repairs were done

What About MacBooks? Is There a Similar Check?

MacBooks don't have an identical 'Parts and Service History' panel, but you can get similar information: go to Apple menu > About This Mac > System Report, and check the Hardware section for component serial numbers and details. For a more complete picture, Apple Support staff (at an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider) can look up a Mac's full repair history using its serial number — useful before buying a used unit.

What This Means If You're Selling or Just Got Repaired

  • If you had a repair done and now see a genuine-parts warning, ask your repair shop whether the part is genuine-but-unpaired, or a quality aftermarket part — both can perform excellently, but you deserve to know which you have
  • If you're selling a device that shows these messages, disclose it upfront — buyers who do their homework will find it anyway, and transparency builds trust (and often closes the sale faster)
  • If you're buying and see these warnings, don't panic — ask to test the actual functionality (battery health %, screen color accuracy, camera photo quality) rather than relying on the message alone
A Genuine Parts Warning Isn't Always a Red Flag — Context Matters

Many excellent independent repair shops (including ours) use premium, high-grade components that perform identically to or better than Apple's own parts in real-world use — they simply aren't 'paired' through Apple's proprietary software process, which only Apple-authorized centers can do. The warning message reflects Apple's verification process, not necessarily the actual quality or performance of the part installed.
