MacBook Battery Swelling: When It's Dangerous, Why It Happens, and What to Do Immediately

A swollen MacBook battery is a safety issue, not just a repair issue. The trackpad bulging upward, the bottom case lifting, or the display gap widening — these are signs of thermal runaway risk. Here's what causes battery swelling and exactly what to do.

A swollen MacBook battery is one of the few repair situations that is also a safety situation. Lithium-ion batteries swell when internal chemical reactions produce gas — a process called thermal runaway. Left unchecked, a swollen battery can rupture, catch fire, or in extreme cases explode. At Mac Repair Center Mumbai, we treat every swollen battery case as urgent. Here's what you need to know.

How to Know If Your MacBook Battery Is Swollen

  • Trackpad clicking on its own, or not clicking at all — the battery sits directly under the trackpad and swelling pushes it upward, interfering with the click mechanism
  • Bottom case lifting — the bottom panel of the MacBook is no longer flush; it bulges upward in the centre
  • Display gap — a visible gap appears between the display and the keyboard section when the lid is closed
  • Trackpad feeling 'spongy' or uneven — different areas respond differently to pressure
  • Visible bulge through the keyboard — the keyboard surface is no longer flat
  • MacBook rocking on a flat surface — the swollen bottom is no longer level

If you can see, feel, or hear the battery — hissing, crackling, or any unusual smell — this is an emergency. Place the MacBook on a non-flammable surface away from flammable materials, do not use it, and call us immediately. Do not put a swelling battery in a bag or enclosed space.

Why MacBook Batteries Swell

Lithium-ion batteries contain electrolyte that, under certain conditions, decomposes and releases gas. The pouch cells in MacBooks (unlike cylindrical cells in some other laptops) are particularly susceptible to visible swelling because the flexible pouch can expand. The main causes:

  • Age and natural degradation — most batteries over 4–5 years begin to swell as the electrolyte chemistry degrades. This is the most common cause.
  • Overcharging — charging circuits that fail to terminate charging correctly can overheat the battery and accelerate electrolyte decomposition.
  • Physical damage — a battery that has been pierced, crushed, or bent by an impact can start swelling immediately.
  • Heat — sustained high temperatures (leaving MacBook in a hot car, intense CPU loads in a hot room) accelerate battery degradation. Mumbai's climate is a real factor here.
  • Manufacturing defect — rare, but some battery batches have higher failure rates. Apple has issued replacement programmes for some MacBook models.
  • Deep discharge — allowing the battery to drain completely and sit discharged for extended periods degrades electrolyte chemistry.

What to Do — Immediately

  1. 1Stop using the MacBook. A swollen battery can fail unpredictably. Do not use it for important work while swollen.
  2. 2Do not charge it. Continuing to charge a swollen battery increases the risk of rupture.
  3. 3Do not try to open the MacBook yourself to remove the battery. MacBook batteries are glued in place. Attempting to pry a swollen battery can puncture the cells — which can cause immediate ignition.
  4. 4Keep it on a hard, non-flammable surface — a desk or concrete floor. Away from paper, fabric, and other flammable materials.
  5. 5Do not put it in a bag, drawer, or enclosed space if it is actively swelling.
  6. 6Call Mac Repair Center immediately: +91 77000 44192. We handle swollen battery cases as priority — same-day if possible.

MacBook Battery Swelling — Is the Rest of the MacBook Damaged?

In most cases, if the battery is replaced before rupture occurs, the rest of the MacBook is undamaged. The logic board, display, and keyboard typically survive. However, if the swelling has been severe and prolonged, the trackpad can be permanently deformed (it's a glass surface over a mechanism — sustained pressure causes stress fractures in the force sensors). We inspect the trackpad, keyboard, and bottom case during every battery replacement and advise on any additional damage.

AppleCare and Battery Swelling

Apple's own service centres can refuse to handle severely swollen batteries due to internal safety protocols — they sometimes tell customers the device is 'beyond service'. If this has happened to you, bring it to us. We handle swollen battery replacements regularly and safely.
