"Logic Board Replacement Required": What Apple's Quote Means for Your M-Series MacBook
By Shrey Sharma, Founder & Lead Technician · October 2026
Apple quoted a full logic board replacement for your M1, M2, M3 or M4 MacBook. Here's why Apple quotes the whole board, what usually failed on it, when chip-level repair is the better deal, and when it honestly isn't.

You took your M-series MacBook to Apple, and the answer came back as "logic board replacement required", along with a number close to the price of a new laptop. Before you pay it or give up on the Mac, it helps to understand what that quote actually means. Usually a board replacement isn't the only fix. It's the only fix Apple's service process offers.
Why Apple Quotes a Whole Board
Apple service works at the module level. The board, display, top case and battery are each swapped as one part. Technicians don't remove and replace individual components on a board, so when anything on the board fails, the whole board is the smallest part they can replace. That process is fast, consistent and easy to warranty. It's also expensive, because you pay for a brand-new board, including the Apple chip and storage, even when the actual fault is a single capacitor.
What Usually Fails on an M-Series Logic Board
Most M-series boards that come to us with a replacement quote have one or two failed components, not a dead board. These are the faults we see most often on M1 to M5 MacBooks:
- A failed USB-C port controller (the chip that manages the USB-C ports). The Mac can no longer negotiate power from the charger, the battery runs down, and the Mac appears dead.
- A failed audio IC. A shorted audio chip can make the whole MacBook completely unresponsive, even though the fault has nothing to do with the display or charger.
- A power IC fault, where one of the chips that produce the supplies the Apple chip runs on has failed.
- A failed charging IC, which stops the battery charging even though the charger and port are fine.
- SSD (NAND storage) problems, where the soldered storage chips or their connections fail.
- Liquid corrosion, often behind any of the above, which can stop the board starting long after the spill seemed harmless.
Most of these can be repaired by replacing the specific failed chip under a microscope, using hot-air rework and micro-soldering. The rest of the board, including the Apple chip, stays as it is, and so does your data, unless the fault is in the storage chips themselves.
How Do Chip-Level Repair and a Board Replacement Compare?
| Apple logic board replacement | Chip-level repair | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | Often ₹40,000–₹80,000+, depending on model | Typically ₹6,000–₹16,000 on standard M-series boards; more on Pro and Max |
| Your data | Not kept, because the new board has blank storage | Kept, if the Apple chip and storage are intact |
| What gets replaced | The entire board | Only the failed components |
| Turnaround | Several working days | 1–2 days for most faults |
| Warranty | Apple's repair warranty | 90 days at Mac Repair Center |
When Is a Board Replacement Actually the Better Choice?
- The Apple chip itself has failed. It can't be replaced at component level in practice, so the board has to go.
- Failed storage on its own is not one of them. The storage chips can be replaced at chip level for far less than a new board. The data on failed chips is lost either way, so back up while you can.
- Corrosion has eaten through traces across several layers of the board. Repairs that extensive aren't reliable enough to recommend.
- Your Mac is still under Apple warranty or AppleCare+ and the fault is covered. Then Apple's repair costs you little or nothing, so take it there.
We'll tell you if your board falls into one of these groups. A repair we don't believe in doesn't help you or us.
How Do I Know If My Board Can Be Repaired?
Bring the MacBook (and Apple's quote, if you have it) for a free diagnosis. We check the current the Mac draws from the charger, measure the main power rails, check whether the Apple chip responds, and inspect the board under a microscope for corrosion. You get a written explanation of the fault and a fixed quote before any work starts. If repair isn't sensible, we'll say so.
Is a Repaired Board as Reliable as a New One?
When the cause is clear, such as a shorted capacitor or a damaged charging component, a properly repaired board works exactly like the original, because it is the original with one new part. Liquid-damaged boards are more of a case-by-case call, since corrosion can affect more than the parts that failed. That's why we clean liquid-damaged boards fully rather than only the failed area, and why every repair carries a 90-day warranty.
Should I Get a Second Opinion Before Paying Apple?
If the Mac is out of warranty and the quote is more than half its value, yes. A second opinion costs nothing here, and it tells you whether you're looking at a ₹10,000 component fault or a genuinely dead board. Either way, you'll make the decision knowing what's actually wrong.
Will I Lose My Data If I Accept Apple's Board Replacement?
Yes, unless it's backed up. On every M-series MacBook, the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted by its Apple chip, so a new board means new, empty storage. If you need files that aren't in iCloud or Time Machine, get the original board repaired, or at least repaired far enough to copy the data, before agreeing to a replacement.
