iPhone not charging is often a software glitch or a dirty port — not a hardware failure. Try these 7 fixes before spending money on repairs.

iPhone Not Charging? 7 Fixes to Try Before Visiting a Repair Shop

Your iPhone won't charge — or charges intermittently. Before assuming you need a new charging port or battery, work through these 7 fixes. At Mac Repair Center Mumbai, we've found that at least 30% of 'iPhone not charging' cases are resolved by cleaning the port — for free.

Fix 1: Clean the Lightning or USB-C Port

Lint and debris in the charging port is the #1 cause of iPhone not charging. Check the port with a flashlight. If you see grey/black material, use a wooden toothpick (not metal — it can damage the pins) to gently loosen and remove the debris. Then blow out the port. This single fix resolves the problem in dozens of iPhones we see monthly.

Fix 2: Try a Different Cable and Charger

Cables fail — especially cables that get bent, coiled tightly, or pulled from the connector at an angle. Try a known-good cable and adapter. If it charges with a different cable, the original cable is the problem.

Fix 3: Restart Your iPhone

iOS charging management can occasionally freeze, causing the phone to refuse to recognise a charger. A simple restart (or force restart) often resolves this. For iPhone 8 and later: press Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold Side button until the Apple logo appears.

Fix 4: Check for Water in the Port

In Mumbai's monsoon season, moisture in the Lightning port triggers Apple's liquid detection system — iOS will show 'Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector' and prevent charging to protect the device. Leave the iPhone in a dry, ventilated area for 30–60 minutes before attempting to charge again.

Fix 5: Update iOS

Charging bugs have been introduced in iOS updates before. If the issue started after an update, check for a newer update that may fix it. Settings > General > Software Update.

Fix 6: Try Wireless Charging (MagSafe or Qi)

If your iPhone supports wireless charging and it charges wirelessly but not via cable, the port itself is damaged and needs replacement. This narrows the diagnosis precisely.

Fix 7: Check Accessory Compatibility

If you see 'This Accessory May Not Be Supported', your cable is not MFi-certified (Apple-authorised). Cheap cables from roadside shops often cause this error. Use genuine Apple or MFi-certified cables only.

When You Need Charging Port Replacement

  • Port cleaned but still not charging
  • Multiple cables tried — none work
  • Port visibly bent, corroded, or pins damaged
  • iPhone charges wirelessly but not via cable
  • Water damage confirmed
