Forgot Your Mac Password or the Board Failed? What's Recoverable on an M-Series MacBook With FileVault
By Shrey Sharma, Founder & Lead Technician · October 2026
FileVault decides what can be recovered from an M-series MacBook. When a forgotten password is fixable, when it isn't, how that combines with a dead logic board, and why nobody legitimate can bypass it.

Two very different problems end with the same question: "Can I get my files back?" In one, the MacBook works but you can't remember the password. In the other, the password is fine but the Mac won't turn on. On an M-series MacBook, the answer depends on FileVault, and on which of the two you're dealing with, or whether it's both.
How Do I Know If FileVault Is On?
If the Mac still works, open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and scroll to FileVault. Many Macs have it on, because the setup assistant offers it when you first set up the Mac. If the Mac is dead, think back: if you had to type your password before the Apple logo finished loading, FileVault was almost certainly on.
What Does FileVault Actually Change?
Every M-series MacBook encrypts its internal storage in hardware, whether or not FileVault is on, using keys held inside the Apple chip. Without FileVault, the data unlocks automatically when the original chip starts up. With FileVault, it also needs your login password or your FileVault recovery key. So FileVault doesn't change whether the board must work. It always must. It changes whether a password is needed as well.
Scenario 1: The Mac Works but I Forgot the Password
This is often fixable without losing data, depending on how the Mac was set up.
- Apple Account reset: after a few wrong attempts, the login screen may offer to reset the password using your Apple Account, if that option was allowed during setup.
- FileVault recovery key: if you saved the recovery key when turning FileVault on, you can use it to unlock the disk and set a new password.
- Another admin account: if someone else has an admin login on the same Mac, they can reset your password.
If none of these are available, the data on a FileVault-protected Mac can't be unlocked. The Mac itself can be erased and reused if you can prove it's yours and sign in to the Apple Account it's linked to, but the files are gone.
Scenario 2: The Password Is Fine but the Board Has Failed
This is the classic board-level data recovery case. Repairing the fault on the original logic board, whether that's a shorted component, damaged charging circuitry or liquid corrosion, brings the Apple chip and storage back. You then enter your password as usual, and the data is there. If the Apple chip or the storage itself has failed, the data can't be recovered by anyone, password or not.
Scenario 3: The Board Failed and I've Forgotten the Password
This is the hardest combination, and we'd rather tell you honestly before you spend money. Repairing the board only helps if, afterwards, you can unlock the data with an Apple Account reset, a saved recovery key, or by remembering the password. So the first step is to check: do you have the recovery key saved somewhere, in a password manager, on paper, or in an old email? Does your Apple Account still work? If the answer to all of these is no, a board repair can give you back a working Mac but not your files.
| Situation | Password or key available? | Data recoverable? |
|---|---|---|
| Mac works, password forgotten | Apple Account reset, recovery key or another admin | Yes |
| Mac works, password forgotten | None of the above | No, the Mac can be erased and reused |
| Board failed, password known | Yes | Yes, if the board can be repaired |
| Board failed, password forgotten | Recovery key or Apple Account reset | Yes, if the board can be repaired |
| Board failed, password forgotten | None | No, but the Mac can be repaired and reused |
| Apple chip or storage failed | Doesn't matter | No |
Can a Repair Shop Bypass FileVault or Activation Lock?
No, and you shouldn't trust anyone who says otherwise. FileVault encryption is tied to the Apple chip and your password, and there is no legitimate workaround. Activation Lock, which links the Mac to your Apple Account through Find My, can only be removed by signing in to that account or by Apple with proof of purchase. We don't bypass either. These protections exist so that a stolen MacBook is worthless to the thief.
Where Might My FileVault Recovery Key Be?
- In iCloud, if you chose to let your Apple Account unlock the disk. In that case the Apple Account reset option is your route.
- In a password manager such as 1Password, Bitwarden or iCloud Keychain notes.
- On paper, often kept with the Mac's box or receipt.
- With your company's IT team, if the Mac is a work machine managed by your employer.
How Can I Avoid This in Future?
- Keep FileVault on. It protects you if the Mac is stolen. But save the recovery key somewhere outside the Mac.
- Use a password manager for your Mac login password as well as your web passwords.
- Keep a Time Machine backup or cloud sync, so a dead board or a lost password never means lost files.
What Does a Board-Level Recovery Cost?
If the board needs component-level repair to reach the data, that typically costs ₹6,000–₹16,000 on standard M-series boards (MacBook Pros with Pro or Max chips cost more), and it gives you back a working Mac too. Data recovery cases start from ₹3,500 for software-level problems and ₹8,000 for hardware. We'll ask about your password and recovery key during the free diagnosis, so you don't pay for a repair that can't get you to your files.

Dead M1–M5 MacBook? Why Your Data Can Only Be Recovered Through the Original Logic Board
On every Apple Silicon MacBook, the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted by the Apple chip itself. That changes data recovery completely: the only way to your files is to get the original board working again.

Apple quoted a full logic board replacement for your M1, M2, M3 or M4 MacBook. Here's why Apple quotes the whole board, what usually failed on it, when chip-level repair is the better deal, and when it honestly isn't.

It sounds unlikely, but a failed audio chip is one of the faults we see most often on completely unresponsive M1–M5 MacBooks. Why a sound chip can stop the entire Mac from starting, how it's diagnosed, and how it's repaired with your data intact.
