Dead MacBook Air M2? How to Get Your Data Back (and What Not to Do First)

Your MacBook Air M2 won't turn on and your files aren't backed up. A step-by-step guide: check what's already safe, avoid the two mistakes that erase data for good, and how a board-level repair gets the files off.

Dead MacBook Air M2? How to Get Your Data Back (and What Not to Do First)

The MacBook Air M2 (A2681 for the 13-inch, A2941 for the 15-inch) has been one of Mumbai's best-selling laptops since 2022. When one dies suddenly, the first question is rarely about the repair. It's "Are my files gone?" Usually they aren't. But the M2 Air stores everything on chips soldered to the logic board and encrypted by the M2 chip, so the decisions you make in the next few days matter. Here's the order to do things in.

Step 1: Check What's Already Safe

Before you assume the worst, find out what's already backed up. It takes ten minutes, and it changes how much you should spend on recovery.

  • Sign in at icloud.com from a phone or another computer. If Desktop & Documents sync was on, those folders are there. Photos may be there too.
  • Check Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox if you used any of them, and your email for attachments you sent yourself.
  • Look for an old Time Machine disk. Even a months-old backup narrows down what's actually missing.
  • On your iPhone, open Find My. It shows when the Mac was last online, which roughly tells you when the last sync happened.

If everything important is already safe, the question becomes a simple repair-or-replace one. If it isn't, keep reading before anyone opens the Mac.

Step 2: Avoid the Two Mistakes That Erase Data for Good

Two decisions can permanently destroy the data on a dead M2 Air, and both can happen quickly at a service counter.

  1. 1Approving a logic board replacement. The new board comes with a new M2 chip and empty storage. Your old data stays on the old board, encrypted with keys nobody can use any more.
  2. 2Allowing a DFU Restore. When a Mac is stuck, a technician may connect it to another Mac and use Apple Configurator. Revive reinstalls firmware and keeps your data. Restore erases the internal storage. Make sure Restore is never chosen without your agreement.

Tell whoever handles your MacBook, in writing if possible, that you need the data and that no board replacement or DFU Restore should happen without your approval.

Why Can't Someone Just Take the SSD Out?

There's no SSD to take out. On the M2 Air, the storage is a set of flash chips soldered next to the M2 chip, and the M2 chip encrypts everything written to them, whether or not FileVault is on. The keys never leave that chip. So the only way to read the data is to get that specific board running again. Our guide to Apple Silicon data recovery explains this in more detail.

What Usually Kills an M2 Air?

  • A failed USB-C port controller, which stops the Mac negotiating power. The battery drains and the Mac looks dead.
  • A failed audio IC, which can short and make the whole Mac unresponsive.
  • A failed power IC or charging IC.
  • Liquid, often a small spill that seemed harmless, which triggers any of the faults above.
  • Less often, a failure of the storage (NAND) chips or the M2 chip itself.

The first four are chip-level faults. Repairing them brings the original board, and your data, back.

How Do You Get the Data Off a Dead M2 Air?

  1. 1Free diagnosis. We check current draw at the charger, the main power rails, and whether the M2 chip responds. A Mac that shows up in DFU mode has a working chip, which is good news for your data.
  2. 2Repair the fault, such as a failed USB-C port controller, audio IC, power IC or charging IC, so the board powers the M2 chip and storage correctly.
  3. 3Start the Mac. If macOS loads, we copy your files directly. If it only reaches Recovery, we use Share Disk, which makes the internal drive available to another Mac over a USB-C cable.
  4. 4Your data goes onto your external drive, or one we supply, and you check it before we close the job.
  5. 5Then you choose whether to complete the full repair and keep using the Mac.

Will I Need My Password?

If FileVault was on, yes. The data can only be unlocked with your Mac login password (or the FileVault recovery key, if you saved it). Nobody, including Apple, can get around that, and it's what protects your data if the Mac is ever stolen. If FileVault was off, the data unlocks automatically once the original M2 chip starts up.

How Much Does It Cost to Recover Data From a Dead M2 Air?

The price depends on what's wrong with the board, not on how much data there is. Software-level cases start from ₹3,500 and hardware cases from ₹8,000. If the board needs component-level repair before the data can be reached, that repair typically costs ₹6,000–₹16,000, and it also gives you back a working MacBook. You get a written quote after the free diagnosis, before any work starts.

What If the Data Can't Be Recovered?

If the M2 chip itself or the storage chips have failed, the data can't be recovered by anyone, because the encryption keys are lost with the chip. In that case we'll tell you plainly, explain how we know, and you won't pay for a recovery that didn't happen. Your options are then a full board replacement or moving to a new Mac.

How Long Does It Take?

Diagnosis is usually done the same day. Most M2 Air repairs where the board can be fixed take 1–2 days, including copying the data. Liquid-damaged boards can take longer because they are cleaned fully before power is applied again.
