MacBook Air M2 Not Turning On? 6 Fixes to Try Before Visiting a Repair Shop

By Shrey Sharma, Founder & Lead Technician · Updated April 2026
MacBook Air M2 completely dead? Before spending money on repairs, try these 6 expert-verified fixes — most M2 'no power' cases have a free solution.

The MacBook Air M2 is Apple's most popular laptop — and despite its reliability, dead unit reports do happen. Unlike Intel MacBooks, the M2 has no separate SMC chip, which changes some troubleshooting steps. Here's what to try before visiting a repair shop.
Fix 1: Force Restart (Different on M2)
On the MacBook Air M2, hold the power button for 10 seconds until the screen goes dark and the machine powers off. Wait 10 seconds, then press power again. This is equivalent to an SMC reset on Intel models.
Fix 2: Check the Charger and Cable
- Use the original Apple USB-C cable that came with the M2 Air
- Try a different USB-C port (M2 Air has two)
- Test with a different USB-C charger if available — minimum 30W recommended
- Check the cable for physical damage or fraying
- Plug directly into a wall socket, not a surge protector
Fix 3: Let It Charge for 30 Minutes
The M2 MacBook Air has a deeply discharged battery state that can prevent it from booting even when plugged in. Plug in with a working USB-C cable, leave it for 30 minutes without pressing any buttons, then try powering on.
Fix 4: Run Apple Diagnostics
If the M2 Air turns on but behaves unexpectedly, run Apple Diagnostics: shut down the MacBook, hold the power button until you see startup options, then hold Command + D. This scans for hardware faults and returns error codes that point to specific component failures.
Fix 5: Boot into Recovery Mode
If the M2 Air powers on but doesn't reach the desktop, try Recovery Mode: hold the power button until the startup options screen appears, then click Options > Continue. From here you can run First Aid on the SSD, reinstall macOS, or diagnose startup failures.
Fix 6: Check for Physical Damage
- Inspect the USB-C ports for debris, bent pins, or liquid corrosion
- Check the bottom case for any signs of flex or swelling (battery)
- Look for any discoloration on the keyboard or around the trackpad (liquid indicator)
- If any liquid damage is suspected, do NOT keep charging — bring it in immediately
If none of these steps restore power, the issue is almost certainly a hardware fault — most commonly a blown fuse on the charging circuit, a damaged USB-C controller, or (less commonly) a logic board fault. These require chip-level repair.
